The Segway – General Information
The Segway PT (Personal Transporter) is a lightweight and manoeuvrable means of transport for one person. It is electric, has a standing platform and two wheels. Its technology enables it to keep itself in balance. This quality makes it a pioneer of its kind. It was invented by Dean Kamen in 2001 and is therefore a relatively recent attainment. It has a microprocessor and a small, very quiet electric motor. Both are well sealed so they don’t get wet when driving in the rain or through water. The Segway can travel up to 20 km / h and has an approximate range of 45 km.
How the Segway works
At first glance, you might think that it must be incredibly difficult to keep your balance on it. In fact, however, it is being done by the device’s advanced technology. This is exactly why no previous experience is required to take part in the Segway tours. The operation is so simple that it is basically comparable to walking. To move forwards or backwards on a Segway, all you have to do is lean slightly on the respective side, i.e. to the front or to the back. The vehicle then directs the wheels in the desired direction. A network of intelligent sensors makes this possible, these form the heart of this marvel. You turn corners with the help of the handlebars and again by slightly tilting your body, as already explained. You can brake by leaning backwards. As you can see, these are very intuitive movements and not complicated processes.
How long the battery lasts
As with all fuel and battery-powered vehicles, the Segway’s performance depends on a number of external factors. With regard to the durability of your battery, which should generally allow a range of at least 35 km, the following is decisive: 1. Driver: The higher his weight, the shorter the range. 2. Incline: Uphill journeys consume more energy and thus shorten the range. 3. The tires: To roll easily, they should always be properly inflated. 4. The floor: bumps slow it down and reduce the range. 5. Wind: Headwind creates resistance, which translates into higher energy consumption 6. Driving style: strong acceleration and fast driving reduce the range
Who are Segways suitable for
Driving is incredibly relaxed and very entertaining and does not demand a great deal of effort from the driver. It is simply ideal for exploring the city and the surrounding area, as you can easily reach all important places. As already mentioned above, no previous knowledge or driving licenses are required to drive a Segway, due to the simple handling. Before your tour on two wheels, the guide will show you how it works, give you instructions on how to drive and you will do some test laps.

The requirements for a Segway tour in Tenerife
Basically, as with any activity, you must be in good health and be able to stand and walk on your own. The only existing limitation are regarding the weight of the driver. If your weight is more than 100 kg or less than 30 kg, you are unfortunately not allowed to get on the Segway. For this reason, children under 8 years of age cannot take part in the tour. These regulations are for your own safety. Further information can be found in our sections “Please note!” and “Services and Prices!”. In addition to the above-mentioned requirements, there are also a number of basic rules of conduct when driving a Segway. Remember, you are not alone when travelling on public roads. You have to be considerate of other road users such as pedestrians or cars. 1. Since you are traveling on public roads with the Segway, you are not allowed to drive under the influence of alcohol, drugs or narcotics. Logically, the consumption of these substances is also not allowed during your tour. 2. Always follow the guide’s instructions. 3. Never get off the Segway while it is in motion. 4. Keep an eye out for the roadway and don’t get distracted. 5. Do not drive over stones, curbs or other prominent objects to avoid damaging the vehicle. 6. Always keep a safe distance of at least 3 meters from the Segway in front of you. 7. You must drive in a single row, one behind the other. Avoid driving side by side or in a zigzagging. 8. Never let go of the handlebars of your vehicle while driving.
What you must definitely take with you
• Footwear: It is important that you wear sturdy shoes such as sneakers or trainers when driving a Segway. It is very likely that you will not be allowed to participate in flip-flops or sandals, as they do not offer sufficient safety. • Sunscreen: As you probably already know, the sun on the Canary Islands is very intense all year round, even on cloudy days. It is therefore recommended that you use sunscreen with a high sun protection factor and that you apply it several times while staying outside. • Bag: It is best to keep your belongings in a backpack or belt pouch so that you have your hands free. • Jacket: it can get cool in shady areas or on days with a strong breeze. We also recommend wearing UV-resistant T-shirts. When doing outdoor activities, always keep in mind that the weather can be unpredictable. Now you know exactly how it works!
