The differences between Quads and ATVs
At first glance, they are very similar to one another; the quad and the ATV are both four-wheelers, but on closer inspection you quickly notice that they have very different properties. The first one has a sportier design and is intended for use on asphalt and race tracks. The ATV, on the other hand, is a more stable four-wheel drive vehicle and was designed for driving on uneven terrain. For this reason, the latter is often used for rescue, towing or adventure trips. Nevertheless, the term “quad” is often used for both vehicles due to their similarity.
The differences between Quads and motorcycles
Some people see a great parallel between these two vehicles. After all, the motorcycle and the quad have some elements in common: the gas pedal is on the handlebars, the brake is operated with the foot, the tank is located above the engine. In addition, the passengers are placed one behind the other. Sometimes the quad comes with fairing and sometimes it is completely naked. The existing differences, however, become noticeable at the latest when driving and then even have a significant effect. The quad is much more unstable and tends to tip over if you make the slightest mistake. Especially when making sudden movements while driving at high speed. The motorcycle, on the other hand, generally requires a higher speed and therefore demands greater concentration from the driver. This is not particularly beneficial if you want to explore a new place and enjoy the scenery. We will take up this point again in the following text to explain the driving experience with the quad in more detail.
Guided Quad safari in Tenerife
Tenerife offers a compendium of almost all types of landscapes that you can find on the Canary Islands: beaches of light or deep black sand, volcanic and desert landscapes, forests and cities. Each one forms an absolutely breathtaking backdrop for a quad safari. Thanks to the extensive local knowledge of the guides, you can reach viewpoints that give you a wonderful panoramic view of the south coast. You will also drive through the absolutely fascinating lunar landscape around the highest point in Spain. All of this, of course, with the appropriate responsible behaviour so as not to damage the precious ecosystem.
Can you rent a quad in Tenerife?
If you have never ridden a quad bike before, it is advisable to book a guided tour instead of driving around on your own. This will ensure that you receive all the necessary instructions for safe driving and learn to operate the vehicle correctly. Those who already have experience driving this type of vehicle can of course rent one and set off on your own, however, always plan your route in advance carefully. You have to keep in mind that it is in no case it is allowed to leave the paved roads and drive across the terrain. For reasons of environmental protection, driving outside of public roads requires a special permit from the relevant authority.
What should be considered when driving a quad?
As we have already mentioned, the quad requires a specific driving style and this neither is like driving a motorcycle nor a car. Its nature demands a certain stability and certain movement sequences from the driver and passenger. The quad tends to lean outwards when driving through a curve. You have to counteract this tendency with your own weight in order to keep your balance and thus reduce the risk of tipping over. In order to avoid falling over, you must also brake very carefully, especially on descents, and also not make any abrupt movements. The operation of the steering wheel is also very unique, because the gas is operated with the thumb. During your excursion, however, you do not have to worry about shifting gears, because this is done automatically. The operator will explain all of this to you in detail and you can practice it on a test drive before you start the tour.
The requirements for driving a quad
The requirements for age and experience differ depending on the operator. In Europe, it is generally possible to drive these vehicles from the age of 18 and with a class B driving license, but this may vary with the different companies in Tenerife. The required minimum age is often 21 years, whereby a driving experience of at least 2 years is required. However, the age of the passengers, which can be at least 7 and up to 12 years, and the total weight of both passengers are also to be considered. Without closed shoes it is not allowed to take part in the quad safari at all. You can find all the important requirements for the respective tour in our “Important note!” section on the website.
Quads and law on helmets
According to Spanish road traffic rules, both driver and passenger must put on a helmet as soon as you get on the vehicle and wear it during the entire quad tour. The operator is obliged to provide each participant with such a helmet. Of course, the costs for this are included in the price of your excursion.
What you should absolutely consider
This activity is hugely popular with holiday makers in general. It can be practiced all year round, but demand rises especially between June and September. The available spaces are usually sold out quickly during this period. Therefore, ensure to make your reservation on our website some time in advance, it is best to secure your place before you even leave for Tenerife. It would be a shame if you miss this great quad tour!
What you must definitely take with you
Driving license: it is compulsory and the original must be carried with you. Copies are not permitted and the organizer will check it before the tour starts. So please don’t forget to take your driver’s license with you on the day of the excursion. Sportswear: It is recommended that you wear comfortable clothing. Bear in mind that a lot of dirt and dust will raise up during the tour. So, don’t wear your best clothes. Jackets: To be on the safe side, always pack a jacket, especially in the months of October to May. In the interior of the island, the wind can be quite cold despite the sun. Dust cloth: it is recommended to use a cloth or scarf to protect your face from the dirt and dust that is whirled up from the road. Sun protection: use the highest possible sun protection factor. Apply the sun cream before you leave your holiday accommodation, because this is the only way to protect yourself adequately from the sun. Sunscreen is necessary all year round and don’t be fooled on cloudy days, even then you can get nasty surprises. Choose a quad tour, put on your helmet and enjoy the fascinating ride through Tenerife.
