Most of you will have heard of it, but not all have ridden it yet. If the latter is your case, it is surely because you simply still have some concerns. You are wondering whether an E Bike is difficult to operate, whether you have to pedal, what speed it can reach or whether the battery can discharge during the tour.
Don’t worry anymore, all you have to do is read the following article. Here we answer all your questions about E-Bikes in Tenerife and many more.
The differences between traditional bicycles and electric bicycles
At first glance, both bikes appear the same. However, the e-bike has a small motor on the tires or in between, the performance of which can vary depending on the model. This motor is electric and supports the cyclist’s pedalling movement. This means that you still have to pedal to move around, otherwise it would no longer be a bicycle. The battery power helps you get forward and is particularly noticeable when driving uphill. The remaining components are similar to those of a conventional bicycle. This means that if you can ride a bike you won’t have any problems with riding an e-bike.
The E-Bike – General Information
Looking at this clever means of transport, one could get the impression that it is a recent invention. But that is far from it! The vehicle received its first patent from Ogden Bolton Jr. already in 1897, back then without pedals. His second patent was then further adapted by the inventor Egon Gelghard. It was finally properly marketed thanks to the Giant Lafree brand, which also gave it the design that we have known since the 90s and to this day. Since then, its performance has been continuously improved, its use has become much more cost-effective, faster and comfortable and therefore more and more suitable for everyday use.
How the electric bike works
In order to understand how an e-bike works, you should consider the proper designation of this vehicle. Its real name is „Pedelec“ (Pedal Electric Cycle), which refers to a bicycle with pedal assistance. A clear but significant difference that needs to be considered: With a real e-bike you don’t actually have to pedal (comparable to a moped) but you do with a Pedelec. The motor is only activated by moving the pedals and reduces the effort required for this to a minimum. A driving experience that is comparable to cycling with a tailwind.
How long the battery lasts
The batteries in these bicycles have a specific running time, which depends on various factors. Depending on this, between 40 and 120 km can be covered without having to recharge in between. The following should be considered with regard to battery performance:
– Engine power: how often, how strong and how long it is used
– Weight of the rider: this is added to the weight of the bike itself
– Tire pressure: this should always be optimal
– Gradient: when driving uphill
– Resistance: intensity of the headwind
Who are electric bikes suitable for
There are now almost all types of bicycles as an e-bike version and each in different models, so they are suitable for practically everyone. All you have to do is choose the one that best meets your needs and choose the motor cable according to your own driving performance. Beginners and the less sporty will first choose an easier route and use the engine to a greater extent to help. Those who already have practice in this sport will always keep the motor performance to a minimum and may even choose an e mountain bike for increased riding fun. Depending on your driving experience, you will find the right model.
Can you rent E-Bikes in Tenerife?
If you don’t feel like cycling in a group, you can always rent an e-bike in Tenerife to ride alone. You can find them in almost every bike rental shop, in practically every town on the island. There is usually a large selection of models and of course you get a helmet to be on the safe side. Don’t forget that helmets are mandatory in Spain as well. Please remember that you should plan your route in advance in order to avoid unnecessary problems. This is also helpful when choosing the right type of bike. After all, there is a major difference whether you drive on asphalt within the village, on gravel roads or even in the mountains. We also recommend that you always be well equipped: water, supplies, etc.
The differences between electric bikes and mopeds
As we have already explained in the previous sections, the electric bike is in no way like a moped. With e-bikes, the motor is only activated when the pedals are pushed. There are more powerful bikes that resemble a moped in that they move when pressing a button. Please note that in Spain there are different requirements for driving a moped than for an e-bike.
The requirements for driving an electric bike
You do not need a driver’s license to ride an e-bike in Tenerife. The bike does not exceed the speed of 25 km / h, therefore it is also exempt from insurance. However, there are certain minimum requirements that the operators or rentals set, including physical fitness, driving skills, maximum weight or minimum age. In order to avoid unpleasant surprises, check these requirements when booking.
